Mentally Mature Adult

Child (ish), Adolescent, Residual Juvenile

   

1. Is globally centered (us-ism). Exhibits empathy

Is ego centered (me-ism). Is selfish, jealous, and vindictive

   

2. Is responsible and dependable

Is irresponsible. Lives in alibis.

   

3. Exhibits propriety

Exhibits impropriety

   

4. Exhibits integrity and honesty. Is ethical. Wants to do the right thing

Does the right thing because of intimidation or fear of retribution

   

5. Exhibits reason, logic, deliberation

Exhibits illogic, emotion, impulse, tantrum, vanity, sulking, retribution

   

6. Works at being upbeat, counts blessings

Allows cynicism. Counts misfortunes-- especially a residual juvenile

   

7. Is self-actualized, intrinsically motivated, self-sculpting, and has high ego-strength

Is passive, lethargic, torpid, or unconcerned

   

8. Works for long-term rewards and goals. Seeks happiness. Is willing to acquire assets slowly--in small amounts day-by-day

Seeks quick rewards.

Seeks fun.

   

9. Is realistic

Seeks pie-in-the-sky--a gambler

   

10.Increases work output to overcome life’s challenges. Follows through on decisions

Is overwhelmed by failure, sulks, throws tantrums, rationalizes for failure, and becomes a martyr

   

11. Wants excellence. Will work until a good job is done

Settles for mediocrity, will work only until quitting time

   

12. Feels in control of his own destiny

Complains that all bad things are someone else’s fault or are preordained by birth, fate, the stars, emotions . .. Is passive to life

   

13. Has adopted a consistent persona. Is certain that one’s self is a product of how one’s impulses are trained. Realizes that the search for "self" is merely an excuse to indulge immature impulses

Role plays. Emulates a variety of characters--some may be fictional from the media. Is always "searching for "self."


Would you hire you? Would you promote you? Carefully assign numbers from one to ten for each attribute. Compare what you are with what you can be and work on your weaknesses.

Note: A person may be mentally mature by any of many criteria. However, someone who is loyal to the "Attributes" outlined by this chart will, by this definition, be mentally mature to the degree that he or she allows them to become impulsive behavior patterns. People who are mentally mature will make decisions based on deliberation, upbeat attitudes, global needs, and with less personal bias; hence they will most likely make wise selections.
